Imation Pro WX Now Shipping Out World’s First Wireless USB External Hard Drive

Saturday, November 21st, 2009

If you’ve wished you could connect your external hard drive to your computer without having to use the USB cable like a hard drive enclosure would but now you can.

Imation announced Thursday the availability of the first wireless USB external hard drive, the Pro WX. The hard drive works just like any other USB hard drive, with one exception… it doesn’t require a USB cable.

Wireless USB has been under development for about five years, and some of the first products were shown at CES 2009 this year. The technology allows you to connect USB 2.0 devices to a computer wirelessly from up to 30 feet away with a throughput speed of up to 480Mbps.

According to Imation, the Pro WX wireless USB external hard drive offers less than that, with speeds of up to only 120Mbps or 15MBps; this is about three times slower than regular USB 2.0 hard drives. At this speed it can finish copying the entire content of a CD-ROM in about 50 seconds. Other than that, this drive is based on the 3.5″ desktop hard drive and offers 1.5TB of storage!

The Imation Pro WX features a sleep mode feature to conserve energy and a one touch, backup sync button for you to manually start a backup when needed. The device is compatible with both desktops, laptops and Mac/Apple OS’s.

In order to take advantage of the wireless USB, your computer needs to support this. As most computers don’t have built-in wireless USB, there are adapters that you can add to the machine. It’s unclear if an adapter is going to only be included with the Pro WX or without.

But what is clear though, is the fact that this is going to be one of the most expensive external hard drives you can find. At the estimated price of $500, about three times the price of regular external portable hard drive enclosures of the same storage capacity, It’s up to you if it’s worth it when the only benefit is losing the USB cable. We can only hope other companies make this product and find a way to cut down on production costs.

Antec MX-100 3.5″ SATA USB Aluminum Hard Drive Enclosure

Sunday, November 15th, 2009

Keep your data safe and mobile with the Antec MX-100 portable hard drive enclosure, the latest entry in Antec’s prestigious VERIS line of home PC components. With a stylish black finish and sturdy but lightweight aluminum, the hard drive enclosure is easy to set up and easy to use – also I found this one to be the ideal lightweight for this type of item. Just set up the drive, connect it to your computer, and start transferring your data at blazing speeds over a USB 2.0 connection. This model number is for 3.5″ SATA sized hard drives.

The MX-100 is sturdy, stunning and a beautiful portable HDD holder for any desktop/laptop with a available USB port. The unit runs quiet which is always a good thing with portable devices and this is mainly because it features a heat sink rather than a fan and this accounts for sound and noise output. While there are hundreds of hard drive enclosures that can be bought cheaper, this particular one is pleasing to the eye and does an excellent job in what it was made for. Just like anything you would buy these days… you get what you pay for. Highly recommended to other buyers from all current users of this baby!

AcomData Tango 2.5″ USB 2.0 eSATA External Hard Drive Enclosure TNGXXXUSE

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

After seeing and having some portable hard disk enclosures, I decided to see if all the reviews were right. So I went and bought the TNGXXXUSE AcomData Tango 2.5″ USB 2.0 eSATA External Hard Drive Enclosure at BestBuy in which my hopes weren’t very high considering my record with finding a quality product at a “cheap” price. Well guess what? I’M GLAD I BOUGHT THIS ONE!

Unlike the plastic enclosures, this model uses a very futuristic designed aluminum case which will withstand repeated abuse. It also looks great as a bonus and appears to do a very good job dissipating heat. The Tango drive enclosure does not use a fan which eliminates 99% of the noise from the portable hard drive enclosure by the way. I am very impressed even though I don’t know how they do it.

The Tango series external hard drive enclosures creates high performance disk storage with a real sweet style and features fast USB 2.0 and eSATA support. One of the best portable hard drive enclosures because it’s ideal for placement anywhere… anytime with ultra silent operation like stated before. You will be happy to know that this baby is compatible with both Windows and Mac OSX (thank god) making it a true portable storage device with easy installation whenever and wherever you need it.

Make your data more portable and secure with a TNGXXXUSE AcomData hd enclosure. Now go out, pick one of these up and start transforming any of your 2.5” SATA drives into a high performance drive enclosure and then ponder why you waited this long to own one.
